All the colors we are

A big part of our social studies curriculum in kindergarten is learning about who we are as individuals and members of a community. All year long we do different activities that help us explore how each person is unique. Before the sudden school closure, we were in the midst of making "All About Me" books and doing lots of activities to go with them. I hope we get to see each other again soon, and finish the wonderful work we've done on our books! In the meantime, here are some pictures of what we've done so far.

Next we started a discussion about our skin color using the books Shades of People, which taught us that while skin is often called "black" or "white," we are actually all various shades of brown. We looked at paint chip samples in all shades of brown, and picked out ones that were closest to our skin shade. Then we made handprints using our skin color's name (such as tan, cocoa, etc).

We also read books, had discussions and wrote about why we love our hair, what makes us beautiful, and someone who loves us no matter what. We wrote poems called "I am Special," and then we started work on painting our self-portraits, but didn't have enough time to finish before school was closed! I look forward to getting back to school and sharing these beautiful books with families!
